Karl Friedrich Rapp (24 September 1882 in Ehingen (Danube) – 26 May 1962 in Locarno) was a German founder and owner of the Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH in Munich. In time this company became BMW AG . [1] [2] He is acknowledged by BMW AG as an indirect founder of the company.

In April 1917, following founder Karl Rapp's departure, Rapp Motorenwerke was renamed to Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW). [12] : 11 BMW's first product was the BMW IIIa aircraft engine. The IIIa engine was known for good fuel economy and high-altitude performance. [13]
Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto are the founders of BMW. At the request of the German government, Flugmaschinenfabrik Gustav Otto merged with Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke AG (BFW) in 1916. The Rapp Motorenwerke corporation changed into the Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917, and the latter subsequently became an AG (public limited company) in 1918.
