The Lobau (German pronunciation: ⓘ) is a Vienna floodplain on the northern side of the Danube in Donaustadt and partly in Großenzersdorf, Lower Austria. It has been part of the Danube-Auen National Park since 1996 and has been a protected area since 1978.
History. Löbau was first mentioned in 1221 as " Oppidum Lubaw". From 1319, the city was part of the Bohemian (Czech) Crown. In 1346 the city was a founding member of the Lusatian League, consisting of the six cities Bautzen, Görlitz, Kamenz, Lubań, Löbau and Zittau, which was disbanded in 1815.
History. The area of the Löbau district was annexed by Prussia during the First Partition of Poland in 1772 and belonged to the Michelau district until 1818. In 1815, the area became part of Regierungsbezirk Marienwerder in the province of West Prussia.
The Lobau. The Viennese section of the Donau-Auen National Park is an area through which the Danube formerly flowed. After river regulation commenced at the end of the 19th century, however, it was all but cut off from surface water inflow.
Löbau makes history. 1991 - on the occasion of the 770th anniversary of the founding of Löbau in 1991, the Upper Lusatian Six Towns League was reborn.. 1993 - it was decided on 25.05.1993 to merge the districts of Löbau and Zittau to form the Saxonian district of Upper Lusatia, later Löbau-Zittau district, with Zittau as the district seat.
The Lobau, the "water world", lies to the east of Vienna, has an area of 2,300 hectares, and makes up almost a quarter of the entire area of the Donau-Auen National Park. It is one of six Austrian national parks and protects one of the last major floodplain landscapes in Central Europe.
