The magnificent beauty of the remaining desert, however, with its oddly shaped land formations and varied plant life, is being preserved on canvas by longtime Arizonan and plein-air painter Matt Smith. From his studio window, Smith looks out on a patch of desert, a giant saguaro cactus, and huge boulders.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Matt Smith (Matthew) became a well-known plein-air painter of landscapes and also a highly respected teacher, most especially at the Scottsdale Artists School in Scottsdale, Arizona.
These days, Smith can often be found painting en plein air from southern Arizona to the Canadian Rockies, and from the California coast to the Rocky Mountains. “I appreciate traditional landscape painting, and I am inspired by the pristine landscapes of the American West.
