Merced is a city of 86,000 people (2020) in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Located along State Route 99 which runs between the agricultural cities of the eastern San Joaquin Valley, Merced is also a gateway to Yosemite via State Route 140.
Merced, city, seat (1872) of Merced county, central California, U.S. It is situated on Bear Creek in the San Joaquin Valley, about 55 miles (90 km) northwest of Fresno. It was founded in 1872 by the Central Pacific Railroad and was named for the Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Spanish: “Our Lady of Mercy”) River.
