Abstract: This essay considers how Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven (1975) rests at the halfway point in a genealogy of the Arbeiterfilme (workers' films), between Jutzi's Weimar era Mother Krause's Journey to Happiness (1929) and cinema of the contemporary Berlin School.
Mrs. Kusters's husband is a frustrated factory worker who goes over the edge and kills the factory owner's son and himself. Left alone, she learns that everyone is using her husband's death to further their own needs, including her daughter, who uses the publicity to enhance her singing career.
