Traits and Skills of a Music Director Preface The purpose of this paper, prepared by the League’s Conducting Continuum Committee, is to clarify the roles of conductor and music director in American orchestras. It seeks to answer: what does a music director do? and what type of person would make an effective music director?
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Organize and implement a church music ministry program. This includes playing service music and coordinating vocal and instrumental ensembles for two identical services each Sunday. Recruit new participants for all such groups. Lead weekly rehearsals, as needed.
Music Directors take on a leadership role within music departments or music productions, overseeing artistic and organizational aspects of music performances, including selection of music, hiring of musicians, and conducting rehearsals.
Arrange and coordinate regularly scheduled maintenance of all musical instruments of the church. Maintain and administer the Music Fund in cooperation with the Music Committee. Arrange and prepare for special musical programs and services. Direct and work with instrumental soloists and groups.
• Experienced in leading worship/music in church services. • Ability to read and create arrangements, including vocal, instrumental and improvised chord charts. • Comfortable learning/operating programs and apps such as Planning Center Online, Pro Presenter, and other multimedia.
Musicianship and Knowledge. Experience conducting youth groups and designing appropriate concert programming. Demonstrate a solid command of musicianship and working with young musicians. Demonstrate a leadership presence that inspires and motivates from the podium.
