The history of North Hempstead begins with the creation of Long Island over 40,000 years ago. Geologists believe huge glaciers, two miles thick, pushed ice and earth south across Canada and Northern America. Around 20,000 years ago, the last glacier came to a halt on Long Island as it reached warmer ocean currents.
The Town of North Hempstead was created in 1784 by a special act of the New York State Legislature. Originally, North Hempstead was part of the Town of Hempstead being purchased and settled by a group of 30 settlers in 1643. This tract of land spanned from the Sound to the Sea.
In 1784, North Hempstead was. officially recognized by New York State as a separate town. In 1900, Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay Towns, having voted not to become part of. greater New York City, joined to form the new County of Nassau. Nassau Island. had been a colonial Dutch name for Long Island.
