Oakland Cemetery is one of the largest cemetery green spaces in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. Founded as Atlanta Cemetery in 1850 on six acres (2.4 hectares) of land southeast of the city, it was renamed in 1872 to reflect the large number of oak and magnolia trees growing in the area.

Early city officials purchased six acres in 1850 to be a public burial ground for a young-but-fast-growing town of Atlanta. Originally called Atlanta Graveyard or City Burial Place, this was the beginning of Oakland Cemetery. It was officially renamed in 1872.

Situated on 88 acres of greenspace, Oakland Cemetery is located at 248 Oakland Avenue in south east Atlanta. Guided walking tours of the cemetery are offered year round.
Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 70,000. Among its many residents are soldiers, mayors, governors, captains of industry, pioneers, authors, and trailblazers. Many of Oakland’s graves are etched with familiar names borne by Atlanta parks, streets, neighborhoods and businesses.
Historic Oakland Cemetery is Atlanta’s oldest public park and the final resting place of many of the city’s most noted citizens. Less than a mile from downtown, its 48 acres are full of treasures – history and gardens, sculpture and architecture, ancient oaks and magnolias.
