Now that Google Maps and Local Guides both have a photo-uploading feature, says Google, 'we’ve decided to move forward with closing down Panoramio,' something the company first announced plans for back in 2014.
Panoramio was a geo-located tagging, photo sharing mashup active between 2005 and 2016. Photos uploaded to the site were accessible as a layer in Google Earth and Google Maps. [1] [2] The site's goal was to allow Google Earth users to learn more about a given area by viewing the photos that other users had taken at that location. [1]

Panoramio is smaller than Flickr, with about a tenth of its users, and only a fraction of its photos. Nonetheless, Panoramio plays an important role in online representations of places, as photographs on the site can be accessed as a layer in Google Maps and Google Earth.
