     Your webserver is sending a content-type header of type "text/html", and your clients' browsers are acting on that header. If you can tell your server to send "application/octet-stream", then the browsers will ask the users what to do with the file.

     Thanks for the answers and comments.

     I am now able to download the file, however by violating the prerequisite of the question(i.e. anchor tag usage)

     I followed this. The methods below in the link does the job

     function SaveToDisk(fileUrl, fileName) { var hyperlink = document.createElement('a'); hyperlink.href = fileUrl; hyperlink.target = '_blank'; hyperlink.download = fileName || fileUrl; var mouseEvent = new MouseEvent('click', { view: window, bubbles: true, cancelable: true }); hyperlink.dispatchEvent(mouseEvent); (window.URL || window.webkitURL).revokeObjectURL(hyperlink.href);}

     However I now need to destroy the anchor tag created after downloading the link.

     There is now the HTML 5 download

     attribute that can handle this.

     I agree, and think Sarim's answer is good (it probably should be the chosen answer if the OP ever returns). However, this answer is still the reliable way to handle it (as Yiğit Yener's answer points out and--oddly--people agree with). While the download attribute has gained support, it's still spotty:

     With html5, it is possible now. Set a "download" attr in element.

     @CrabBucket - Here's how I solved my issue!! Works great for me :) I was using a controller action to initiate this download from this server side (this is why I did not use a handler). Returning an http response from the controller seemed tricky initially but then I figured out a way to cheat the thing ;) I had to write the following code inside my controller action -

     { HttpWebRequest myRequest = (HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create(FileURL); HttpWebResponse myResponse = (HttpWebResponse)myRequest.GetResponse(); Stream myStream = myResponse.GetResponseStream(); Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"; Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=\"SaveMe.MP3\""); var readBytes = 10000000; var myAudResponse = new byte[readBytes]; int fileLength; do { fileLength = myStream.Read(myAudResponse, 0, (int)readBytes); Response.OutputStream.Write(myAudResponse, 0, fileLength); Response.Flush(); } while (fileLength > 0); myStream.Close(); return new EmptyResult();}

     Use the basic Try-Catch, etc as per your wisdom :) A lot of thanks to various web-forums and also to CrabBucket (the SO question from where you posted the code, had an answer which was very much help!) goes without saying!

     Sorry for multiple edits! My code failed for a moment. I guess, loops are always the way to go!!!
