In that lonely place under a creosote bush is a plaque describing the incident and the date.
Jan 2, 2008 · Between Las Cruces and the San Augustin Pass, off U.S. Route 70, a historical marker commemorates the site of Pat Garrett’s death. The actual spot where the sheriff died, though, was marked by Pat’s eldest son, Jarvis, with a cement monument. The death site was threatened by housing development plans.

Although a historical marker for Garrett's murder exists at the corner of Bataan Memorial East and Jornada Road (Route 70), that is not the site where he was killed. The exact spot is actually 1.2 miles southeast of the marker. Garrett was an "Old West" sheriff who shot and killed the infamous outlaw "Billy the Kid" in 1881.
