Phoenixville evolved from a village in the late 1600s called Manavon which had a population of about 400 people. Later in life he served as President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and when he died in 1916, had a collection of over 10,000 items pertaining to Pennsylvania history. In 1949, the Phoenix Iron Company was renamed the Phoenix Iron and Steel Company, and in 1955 the name was changed again to the Phoenix Steel Corporation.
