A raised beach, coastal terrace, or perched coastline is a relatively flat, horizontal or gently inclined surface of marine origin, mostly an old abrasion platform which has been lifted out of the sphere of wave activity (sometimes called "tread").
When a coastline changes shape, the waves lose energy, so deposition occurs, and the spit grows out to sea. The prevailing wind makes the swash approach the shore at an angle. The backwash is at a right angle because of gravity. Longshore drift moves material in a zig-zag manner along the beach.

At high-energy coastlines, hydraulic action and abrasion can cause the formation of wave-cut platforms. Powerful destructive waves attack the base of the cliff at high tide. The hydraulic action and abrasion create a wave-cut notch which over time increases in size. This is called undercutting.
