Richard Hecht is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Religious Studies at UCSB, where he taught from 1974 until his retirement in 2021. After Walter Capps ran for Congress in 1994, Hecht taught the Vietnam War course until it ended in 2018. Events may be photographed, livestreamed, and recorded.
Apr 10, 2008 · On Tuesday afternoon, October 28, 1997, Professor Richard Hecht, a Judaic scholar and chairman of UCSB’s Religious Studies Department, took an emergency call from the university’s news office. “They told me Walter Capps had died,” he recalled the other day, speaking softly in his book-crammed campus office.
Richard is an Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he has been a full professor since 1991 and director of the Center for the Study of Religion from the year 2000 to 2018. He holds a PhD in History of Religions from the University of California, Los Angeles.
