Robert Florey (14 September 1900 – 16 May 1979) was a French-American director, screenwriter, film journalist and actor. Born as Robert Fuchs in Paris, he became an orphan at an early age and was then raised in Switzerland. In 1920 he worked at first as a film journalist, then as an assistant and extra in featurettes from Louis Feuillade.

The idea to adapt Frankenstein into a film was first put forward by director and screenwriter Robert Florey. Florey had arrived in Hollywood in 1921 as a correspondent for the French Cinema-gazine and stayed on to serve as publicity for Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Florey was invited to the studio to work on its horror properties.

Film historians usually dismissed Florey's protestations as sour grapes, but now it looks like he was speaking the truth.
