Geography. Sandymount is located between 3 and 4 km south-east of Dublin's city centre. At the northern end, it begins where Newbridge Avenue meets Herbert Road, running to Church Avenue at the coast, west along the DART rail line, and south to Merrion Gates.

It is on the southern coast of the bay of Dublin, and is much resorted to in summer for sea-bathing, for which its fine sandy beach presents every facility.
The Sandymount is known for its long, brilliant beach, overshadowed by a 19th-century tower designed by Martello for the safety of the shoreline. It is a popular location for fishing, kayaking, and weekend walks overlooking Dublin Bay, even bringing crowds to the Irish Sea for summer swimming.
