May 13, 2019 · The film’s title may suggest a type of dysfunctional, middle-class suburban family drama, but Secret People is a tale set in the years before the second world war, in which two sisters flee to London while their father is executed by their country’s dictator.
In 1930, Maria Brentano and her younger sister Nora flee to London after their father is murdered by a European dictator. Seven years later, during a weekend trip to Paris, Maria unexpectedly meets Louis, her former lover who is now plotting the assassination of the dictator.
When her father is murdered, Maria (Valentina Cortese) moves to London with her young sister. They live with Anselmo (Charles Goldner), a family friend, and resume a normal life.
