When Sir William Marshal died on 14 May 1219, he was the most powerful man in England. As earl of Pembroke, he ruled vast estates stretching across England, Wales and Ireland ( including Cartmel, where he founded the Priory in around 1189).
The first of the five sons of William Marshal (I) who in turn became earls of Pembroke. In 1220 his domain in Dyfed was attacked by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth who had complained of the inroads made by the earl's tenants on the Welsh in spite of the truce.
He was the Regent of England during the childhood of King Henry III from the king's ascending to the throne in 1216 until William's death in 1219. During his time, he was one of the most important persons in the monarchy next to the Royal family itself.
