A centrepiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower has become one of the South West's most well-known landmarks. The lighthouse was originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759 at a cost of £40,000, but was taken down in the early 1880s when it was discovered that the sea was undermining the rock it was standing on.

Nov 27, 2020 · This reef is submerged with just 1-metre of rock visible at high tide making it almost impossible to locate. The first lighthouse on Eddystone was built in 1698 but was destroyed in the ‘Great Storm” in 1703. A second light was built in 1708, but this was destroyed by a fire in 1755 when the lantern caught alight.
