Sochi (Russian: Сочи, IPA: ⓘ, from Ubykh: Шъуача – seaside) is the largest resort city in Russia. The city is situated on the Sochi River, along the Black Sea in Southern Russia, with a population of 466,078 residents, and up to 600,000 residents in the urban area.
The Russian settlement built in the area was named Sochi in 1896 and received the status of a city in 1917. The first tea plantations were established there in 1901–1905 and resulted in the production of the most prominent brand of Russian tea.
