Oct 15, 2012 · Gerard, who died in 1837, painted this masterpiece of St. Teresa of Avila ten years earlier. It was commissioned for a hospital and before its placement was shown in the salons of Paris. It is one of the great masterpieces of French Romanticism.
It was adame Récamier who took the lead in commissioning David's pupil Gérard to paint the princess's patron saint, Theresa of Ávila - most famous for her concept of 'mystic marriage' with God — and presented the picture to the new chapel.
This realization led her to restore Carmelite life to its original observance of austerity, and to introduce a prayerful life of penance at the Carmelite convents she founded — what she termed “our vocation of reparation” for the sins of humankind.
