Tarzan takes this seriously and, unfortunately, jumps into the water and swims up to an elephant and grabs its tail, causing the elephants to run wild and rush through the gorillas' territory. Eventually, he gets the hair, but causes all the elephants (except Tantor) to stampede right towards the gorillas, forcing Kerchak to save a baby gorilla from being trampled. In the aftermath of the stampede, Terk is relieved that Tarzan is still alive and amazed that he got the hair, and they soon befriend Tantor.
Shortly thereafter, they look more closely at Tarzan catching a hair from an elephant. However, Tarzan, unfortunately, makes elephants panic at seeing him, in which they stampede toward Flynt, Mungo, and Terk, fleeing.
Tarzan comes to the aid of both Jane and Kerchak when their lives are in danger. Tantor musters courage upon hearing that his life-long friend is in trouble. As a boy, the rambunctious Tarzan nobly accepts responsibility for causing an elephant stampede. As an adult, he demonstrates an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
