Apr 25, 2024 · The Temple of Poseidon at Sounio is one of the most majestic temples in the whole of Greece. It is located at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, about 70 kms (43.5 miles) out of central Athens.
The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple on Cape Sounion, Greece, dedicated to the god Poseidon. There is evidence of the establishment of sanctuaries on the cape from as early as the 11th century BC.
This Doric temple was erected during the Golden Age of Pericles. It was devoted to Poseidon, the Olympian God of the Sea, and is located at the edge of Cape Sounion at the southern coast of Attica, with a spectacular view of the Aegean Sea.
One of the most beautiful temples in Greece, Temple of Poseidon, was built between 444 and 440 BC, with 38 columns that ascended 20 feet into the air. In the worship area, it also had a 20-foot-tall bronze figure of Poseidon.
Dec 19, 2016 · On top of this 60 meter cliff stands one of the most important sanctuaries in the region: the temple dedicated to Poseidon, God of the Sea. Built between 444 and 440 BC, the temple was constructed of marble from the valley of Agrilesa, about four kilometers north of the Sounio Cape.
Visiting the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. The Temple of Poseidon is open daily, all year round, from 9:30 am until sunset. The last admission is 20 minutes before sunset. The Temple is closed on major public holidays, and also has free admission days several times throughout the year.

The temple of Poseidon was a peripteral building of the Doric order, made of marble from nearby Agrileza, with six columns at its ends and thirteen on each long side for a total of 34--of which thirteen survive today.
At the end of the Sounio Peninsula at the southernmost point of Attica, lies the Temple of Poseidon within a fort that protects the coast of Attica. Made entirely of white marble, it was erected in the middle of the 5th century BC and built to honour Poseidon, god of the sea.
