Sower and the Seed. Artists: Aidan Hart with contributions from Donald Jackson and Sally Mae Joseph. Like the “Life in Community” illumination, this illumination was painted with techniques associated with the Eastern Church and its iconography. It illustrates Mark 4:3-9.
In this icon-like image, the sower's halo, with its cross, identifies him as Christ sowing the word of God. His contemporary Western work clothes indicate that this image is a metaphor, in which the sacred message is revealed through a mundane action.
May 16, 2022 · This illumination is created in an Eastern iconographic style that depicts Christ in contemporary blue jeans sowing seed. The gold halo and cross behind Christ’s head help us to identify him. Below Christ, we see four distinct mounds of soil: solid, rocky, shallow and fertile.
