  2. Dec 18, 2023 · Looking for cheap places to travel? We did a little digging to find the countries where the US dollar goes the furthest, from central Europe to Southeast Asia.

    • Laos, $30/day. Back in my budget backpacking days around Southeast Asia, Laos was one of the two destinations where I was able to keep my budget at $30/day, even though accommodation was slightly more expensive than most places in Southeast Asia at that time.
    • Vietnam, $30/day. I probably had the healthiest and cheapest street food in Vietnam. Think a soup with rice noodles, cilantro, amazing broth, and a whole shank of pork for $1.50, or a cup of strong, aromatic coffee for $1.
    • Cambodia, $25/day. I know for sure that if you choose to rough it, you can easily spend a month in Cambodia with just $1000. Dorms are very basic but can be dirt cheap, the same goes for food and alcohol.
    • Northern Thailand, $30/day. The north of Thailand is easy on a tight budget. As one moves south, costs for accommodation start to double, triple, and even quadruple.
    • Mexico. Okay, Mexico is not quite as cheap as it was in recent years; you now get 10% fewer pesos per dollar than in 2019 and much less than during the pandemic.
    • Vietnam. Despite its major economic boom, Vietnam remains easily one the cheapest Asian countries. While it’s not best for postcard-perfect beaches (consider The Philippines or Indonesia instead), it’s amazing for its food, nature, and cultural sights.
    • El Salvador. Wait, isn’t El Salvador supposed to be a crime-ridden no-go-zone? Not so fast! While this used to be true, a controversial but admittedly effective crackdown on gangs in 2022 and 2023 has completely transformed the security situation.
    • Albania. Albania may well be the cheapest destination in Europe. It’s still early days for tourism in this Balkan country, though some are already calling it “the next Croatia”.
    • New Zealand's South Island brims with majestic landscapes at every turn, from dramatic mountains to fjords to glaciers.
    • The magnetic City of Light draws visitors from around the globe who come to see iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe.
    • What this small French Polynesian island may lack in size it makes up for in sheer tropical beauty. Here, you'll find picturesque beaches, lush jungles and luxurious resorts.
    • Whether you're driving along the Road to Hana, enjoying a bird's-eye view of the lush coastline from a helicopter, snorkeling with sea turtles or simply relaxing on the Hawaiian island's honey- or black-colored beaches, you'll find that Maui is unlike any other tropical destination.
    • Thailand. Thailand is where it all began for me so it holds a special place in my heart. It is where I decided to quit my job and travel the world. I lived there.
    • Central America. Want to roam ancient ruins, trek through the jungle, surf, and eat delicious food with few tourists around? Visit the smaller countries in Central America — think El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.
    • Cambodia. While you could put all of Southeast Asia on this list, Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the region — it’s affordable, beautiful, and the locals are incredibly hospitable.
    • The Balkans. Located in southeastern Europe, the Balkans is the cheapest region in Europe. Composed of a handful of countries — most of which see very few tourists — it’s an off-the-radar region that’s super affordable while also offering incredible value.
