- Giant anteater. Also known as Antbear, the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a huge insectivorous mammal species that is indigenous to South and Central America.
- Silky anteater. The silky anteater (Cyclopes didactylus), also known as pygmy anteater, is the only living species of anteaters in the Cyclopes genus and Cyclopedidae family.
- Southern Tamandua. Also known as lesser anteater or the collared anteater, southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) is a South American species of anteater mainly found in Trinidad, Uruguay, Venezuela, southern Brazil, and northern Argentina.
- Northern Tamandua. The northern tamandua (Tamandua Mexicana) is a small anteater in the family of Myrmecophagidae of the tamandua species. The species inhabits the tropical and subtropical forests of Mexico, Central America, as well as the edge of the northern Andean Mountains.
Anteater habitats include dry tropical forests, rainforests, grasslands, and savannas. The silky anteater is specialized to an arboreal environment, but the more opportunistic tamanduas find their food both on the ground and in trees, typically in dry forests near streams and lakes.

- Southern Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) Southern tamanduas are native to South America. They live east of the Andes, as well as north to Colombia, Trinidad, and the Guianas.
- Northern Tamandua (Tamandua Mexicana) Although some of its range overlaps with the southern tamandua, the northern tamandua lives mostly in southern Mexico, down through Central America to Northern Venezuela and Northern Peru.
- Common Silky Anteater (Cyclopes didactylus) The smallest type of anteater is the adorable silky anteater. Also known as the dwarf or pygmy anteater, this small insectivore only grows 14 to 18 inches and weighs just 6.2 to 14.1 ounces!

Giant anteaters inhabit grasslands, wetlands, and tropical forests within their natural distribution. However, many local populations went extinct, especially in Central America, due to hunting, habitat loss, and wildfires.
