Dec 3, 2001 · In 1898, after having become professor at the University in Marburg (then part of Prussia), Behring moved with his family into a house in Wilhelm-Roser-Strasse in Marburg, where his six sons were born. Behring was a family man, though rather patriarchal, which at that time was quite normal.

On 29 December 1896 Behring married the then twenty-year-old Else Spinola (1876-1936), who was a daughter of Bernhard Spinola [ de], the director of the Charité hospital in Berlin, and a Jewish -born mother – Elise Spinola, born Bendix – who had converted to Christianity upon her marriage. Emil von Behring was a German bacteriologist who was one of the founders of immunology. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on serum therapy, particularly for its use in the treatment of diphtheria.
