     Well, if a webpage has very specific CSS just for itself, I guess there is an argument for defining the CSS in the page, otherwise I would always have the CSS in an external file.

     Try to avoid or at least minimise in-lining the CSS as a style attribute on HTML elements though, that would be a PITA to manage.

     Most pages will be template driven with standard content styles, and thus the CSS styles will be defined in external files.

     One thing you might want to think about are the number of CSS files - some people suggest that you should minimise this to just one file site-wide or per-template (or area of the site) to minimise HTTP requests to the server and avoid delayed CSS loading and funny looking styling up until that point.

     So this "contract for CSS usage" is actually just a coding standard for HTML pages?

     This attribute sets the size of the font. Possible values:

     • An integer between 1 and 7. This sets the font to some fixed size, whose rendering depends on the user agent. Not all user agents mayrender all seven sizes.
     • A relative increase in font size. The value "+1" means one size larger. The value "-3" means three sizes smaller. All sizes belong tothe scale of 1 to 7.

     Update: Photoshop CC allows you to uncheck the "embed color profile" option to not embed a profile. It's strongly recommended that you do this unless you have a really good reason not to.

     The short answer is, unfortunately, you're screwed with ANY color profile. Your best bet is to use none, but you can't actually get photoshop to save files like that. This topic has thousands of discussions and opinions, but deleting the color profile allows browsers to interpret the colors of pngs the same way as HTML Hex colors.

     Personally, I strip all my color data using a custom script, but something like TweakPNG should allow you to do the same.

     float is indeed the right property to achieve this. However, the example given by bmatthews68 can be improved. The most important thing about floating boxes is that they must specify an explicit width. This can be rather inconvenient but this is the way CSS works. However, notice that px is a unit of measure that has no place in the world of HTML/CSS, at least not to specify widths.

     Always resort to measures that will work with different font sizes, i.e. either use em or %. Now, if the menu is implemented as a floating body, then this means that the main content floats “around” it. If the main content is higher than the menu, this might not be what you want:

     You can correct this behaviour by giving the main content a margin-left equal to the width of the menu:

     In most cases you also want to give the main content a padding-left so it doesn't “stick” to the menu too closely.

     By the way, it's trivial to change the above so that the menu is on the right side instead of the left: simply change every occurrence of the word “left” to “right”.

     Ah, one last thing. If the menu's content is higher than the main content, it will render oddly because float does some odd things. In that case, you will have to clear the box that comes below the floating body, as in bmatthews68's example.
