2 days ago · Northern Ireland can be thought of topographically as a saucer centred on Lough (lake) Neagh, the upturned rim of which forms the highlands. Five of the six historic counties— Antrim , Down , Armagh , Tyrone , and Londonderry —meet at the lake, and each has a highland region on the saucer’s rim.

- Precambrian. The oldest rocks in Ireland are 1.7 billion years old and are found on the island of Inishtrahull, Co. Donegal. In Ireland, all rocks from the Precambrian have become metamorphic rocks during a later Period.
- Cambrian. The land we now know as Ireland was covered by an ocean we call the Iapetus Ocean during the Cambrian Period. The ocean separated two continents, Laurentia and Gondwana.
- Ordovician. The Iapetus was closing during the Ordovician with the subduction of plates and the generation of volcanoes and earthquakes. Mountains, possibly as high as the modern Himalayas, rose to the north, and there was an increase in sediment being carried by rivers into the closing seaway.
- Silurian. This period is marked by the deposition of huge volumes of sediment in various terrestrial and marine environments and also by volcanism. The Iapetus Ocean closed completely during the Silurian and this is reflected in the sedimentation.
The centrepiece of Northern Ireland's geography is Lough Neagh, at 151 square miles (391 km 2) the largest freshwater lake both on the island of Ireland and in the British Isles. A second extensive lake system is centred on Lower and Upper Lough Erne in Fermanagh. The largest island of Northern Ireland is Rathlin, off the north Antrim coast.
