Coordinates: 35°52′55″N 106°18′08″W. Los Alamos Ranch School was a private ranch school for boys in the northeast corner of Sandoval County, New Mexico (since 1949, within Los Alamos County ), U.S., founded in 1917 near San Ildefonso Pueblo.
On the site of the Los Alamos Ranch School, a secret town sprouted, using almost 46,000 acres, including roads and the right of way for power lines, purchased at a cost of $415,000. Construction was completed in November of 1943 at a final cost of $7 million. At the time, Los Alamos had a population of about 6,000.

When the US Army came and evicted the Los Alamos Ranch School in December of 1942, they took advantage of the pre-made roads and buildings. A map created by the ‘U.S. Engineer Office of Albuquerque, NM’ created a topographic map of the Ranch School grounds.
In February 1943, the Los Alamos Ranch School, an outdoorsy institution for boys, abruptly closed its doors so the U.S. government could take over the campus.

Pueblo ancestors and later Hispanic homesteaders used the plateau for seasonal farming and grazing. In 1917, H.H. Brook’s Alamos* ranch was purchased by Ashley Pond II to start Los Alamos Ranch School, a boys’ school which combined academics and a physical curriculum.

When Ashley Pond Jr. founded the Los Alamos Ranch School in 1917, the road from Santa Fe to the school passed through the tiny village of Buckman, situated on the east side of the Rio Grande.
