Geological description. Uluru (Pitjantjatjara: Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock (Sweet and Crick, 1994; Twidale and Bourne, 2012), is a large sandstone formation in the centre of Australia. It is in the southern part of the arid Northern Territory.

Aug 12, 2023 · Uluru is a huge red-orange sandstone rock formation located in the flat landscape of central Australia. It is considered a sacred site to the Anangu Aboriginal people. While Uluru is often referred to as a monolith, it is scientifically known as an inselberg or monadnock, i.e. an isolated rock formation in an otherwise flat landscape.

- Is It Just a Big Rock in the Desert? Taken out of context, Uluru—also known as Ayers Rock—is indeed just a big old rock in the desert, but context is everything here.
- Why Is It Sometimes Called Ayers Rock? Because of colonialism. English explorer William Gosse visited the rock in the 1870s and named it Ayers Rock in honor of the Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers.
- Can I Climb It? For now, techincally yes. Should you climb it? Hard no. The climb has always been discouraged by the Anangu as Uluru is sacred ground. The rock is also incredibly difficult and dangerous to climb, especially after rainfall which makes the face of Uluru extremely slippery.
- Are There Any Other Restrictions? The Anangu also request that visitors do not photograph certain (clearly marked) sections of Uluru, for reasons related to traditional Tjukurpa beliefs.

This wonderful monolith is 348 meters (1142 feet) high and around 9.4 kilometers (5.83 miles) length. Uluru is composed mainly of coarse-grained arkose, a kind of sandstone with abundance of feldspar (50%) and some other conglomerates, such as quartz and other rock fragments (basalt, chlorite, epidote, amongst others).
