Uluru ( / ˌuːləˈruː /; Pitjantjatjara: Uluṟu [ˈʊlʊɻʊ] ), also known as Ayers Rock ( / ˈɛərz / AIRS) and officially gazetted as Uluru / Ayers Rock, [1] is a large sandstone monolith. It outcrops near the centre of Australia in the southern part of the Northern Territory, 335 km (208 mi) south-west of Alice Springs .

Formerly known as Ayers Rock, Ulu r u is made of sandstone about half a billion years old. It stands 348 metres high and has a circumference of 9.4 km.
At 348m high, Ulu r u is one of the world’s largest monoliths, towering over the surrounding landscape and some 550 million years old. Made of sandstone, Ulu r u is often referred to as the heart of the ‘Red Centre’ and is one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks.
