The first Open Season opened with all the glitz and glitter Aston Kutcher and Martin Lawrence could evoke from a young audience and they received an amicable response (more or less) from kids and critics for the work of B-grade computer animation and overacting. Now, a whole new crew of directors, actors and animators have come together to try to recreate that same sense of awe with half the budget and a quarter of the talent.

To start off with, the only players to return from the first film are the voice talents for Giselle, McSquizzy and Mr. Weenie. This means that we get Jane Krakowski (30 Rock, Ally McBeal), Billy Connolly (Boondock Saints) and Cody Cameron (Shrek) to jump in for the sporadic one-liner while Joel McHale (The Soup) takes over the leading role of Elliot and Mike Epps (The Friday films) takes over for Lawrence as the voice of Boog.

Just like The Return of Jafar and Timon and Pumba 3000 -- or whatever it was titled -- this is just another in the long line of animation sequels quickly produced on the coattails of a successful film, slightly mutated into a strikingly similar story. But without the budget to bring back the original cast, the producers had to go for the next-best thing -- anyone else.

As a children’s title that’s meant to compliment the theatrical release of Open Season, the game fulfills its mission of snagging shelf space, while still managing to throw in some entertaining moments into the mix. The comedy, while basic, actually had us laughing a few times through the game, and even though the story and character designs from t...

  6. Jan 27, 2009 · Open Season 2 has some funny moments, but the plot is fairly weak and it's just not as good as the first movie. The kids that previewed the film found it entertaining, but preferred the original Open Season, and most parents will probably be just as happy skipping Open Season 2. Bonus features include 14-minutes of voice talent interview ...
