Bong Joon-ho has explained the reason behind the title of his 2019 film, revealing that "Parasite" has a dual meaning in this case.

In a Q&A session on Parasite's home entertainment release, Joon-ho addressed some of the decisions that were made behind-the-scenes of Parasite, as he admitted that the title of the Oscar-nominated film could have been a "risky" choice for them.

"[It] was considered almost a little risky and dangerous," he said. "Particularly the marketing team was pretty hesitant because, in Korea, the word 'parasite' has a very realistic and negative connotation."

Bong's Parasite was recently nominated in six Oscar categories, including Best Director, Original Screenplay, Production Design, and Film Editing. It is also the first-ever Korean film to have been nominated for Best Picture, as well as the first from the country to receive a nomination in the International Feature Film category, per the LA Times.

In our review of Parasite, we commended Bong for crafting "a stellar dark comedy about class warfare", saying he is "a virtuoso director at the very top of his game." IGN also named it the best movie of 2019 and one of the best movies of the past decade. The story is set to transition to the small screen in the near future as Bong is turning Parasite into an HBO limited series.

  3. Aug 25, 2023 · Why is the movie called Parasite? The most obvious application of the title would be a reference to the way in which the Kim family ends up taking advantage of the Park family. First the son, Ki-woo, gets a job as an English tutor. He leverages that to get his sister, Ki-jung, a job as an art therapist.

  5. Sep 7, 2019 · The second half of “Parasite” is one of the most daring things I’ve seen in years narratively. The film constantly threatens to come apart—to take one convoluted turn too many in ways that sink the project—but Bong holds it all together, and the result is breathtaking. Kim Ki-woo (Choi Woo-sik) and his family live on the edge of poverty.

  6. Synopsis. Kim Ki-Taek (Song Kang-Ho), an unemployed driver, lives with his wife Choong-Sook (Jang Hye-Jin), son Ki-Woo (Choi Woo-Shik) and daughter Ki-Jeong (Park So-Dam) in a shabby semi-basement apartment. The family struggles to survive, working low-paying gigs such as folding pizza boxes.
