- SUV. Far and away the most popular body style, SUVs are prized for their versatility. Like other types of cars, sport utility vehicles have a complex history.
- Sedan. Before crossover SUVs took over the road, the four-door sedan was the predominant vehicle type. Traditionally, sedans are three-box designs, with the engine in front, cabin in the center, and trunk in the rear.
- Truck. While SUVs have the largest number of variants on the roads, truck models outsell them in the U.S. Historically pickup trucks were work vehicles that could get a crew to a job site and bring all their gear with them in an open bed behind the cab.
- Coupe. Back when four-door sedans were the practical family option, two-door coupes were the sportier, fashion-forward option. As the market moved toward larger vehicles in the 21st century, the often prettier yet less practical coupes became less popular to the point where the only remaining examples were performance cars.
- Sedan. The most common car type is the sedan. A sedan is a four-door car type with a traditional trunk. The difference between a hatchback and a sedan is that the rear luggage compartment door does not include the rear window and the door hinges are installed under the window.
- Crossover (CUV) A crossover is often confused with an SUV. A crossover often comes as two-wheel drive, but it can also come with 4-wheel drive. It is basically an off-road car chassis, but built more for city traffic.
- Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) Another type that climbs this list of car types is the SUV, which is becoming more and more popular. The SUV is a large car that can often carry five to seven passengers with three rows of seats.
- Hatchback. A Hatchback car is basically a mix of a sedan and a station wagon. They often come as a 5-door set and have a hatch that opens upwards. Like the station wagon, a hatchback has door hinges above the rear window.

- Coupe. This is a term that has become the subject of hot debate in car circles lately. The word is French, derived from “cut,” referring to a glass panel that cut the front seat from the rear.
- Sedan. A sedan was originally a chair carried by servants. In automotive usage it has meant an upright, less-sporty model. The modern Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a current example.
- Hardtop. Some cars, as mentioned above, were basically convertibles with a fixed metal roof stretching from the windshield over the passenger cabin, without support pillars cluttering the cars’ flowing lines.
- Convertible. A convertible is so named because the car “converts” from a closed-roof car similar to a hardtop to an open-roof car that lets in all the sunshine and fresh air.
