293 helpful votes. 1. Re: Safe town to stop in southern VA off of i-95. 2 years ago. There should be an number of chain hotels at interchanges along 95 between Richmond and the border. Go to the Virginia Forum, bring up Richmond and click on "hotels" for TAs list for the area.

Montpelier is nice. It's rural but close enough to commute to Richmond for work without killing a ton of gas. Bumpass/Lake Anna is nice but high cost of living and that's an 1h15m commute to Richmond or Cville or 40m to Fredericksburg. Doswell is ruralish, affordable, and hella close to Richmond.
