The Art Adventure Gallery was created to capture the breadth and character of these works and bring them to residents and visitors of Central Oregon. It is a cooperative effort of the artists involved and the Madras community, staffed and managed by volunteers.
Madras, Oregon. Doug and Judy moved to Central Oregon in 1989 when Doug was hired at a local wood products corporation. Judy started doing crafts shortly after the move, mostly as a way to keep busy and to meet people. In 1996, Doug made his first metal sculpture and The Rustic Garden was born.

May 9, 2023 · Housed in a former restaurant, Art Adventure Gallery opened in 1986. Marjean Whitehouse, then mayor of Madras, hatched the idea and enlisted the aid of four determined women from the local art world: Camille Green, Terry Black, Alice Brown, and Sharon Dodge, who became known around town as “three colors in a car.”.
- Originally called “The Basin” after the circular valley the city is in, it is unclear whether Madras was named in 1903 for the cotton fabric called “Madras” that originated in the city of Madras (now Chennai) in Tamil Nadu, India or from the name of the city itself.
- The population was 6,046 at the 2010 census.
- The original plat for Madras was filed on July 18, 1902, by Scandinavian immigrant John A. Palmehm, for whom the town was originally named “Palmain”.
- The name was rejected by the U.S. Postal Service over its similarity to a post office named Parmen, and the name “Madras” was adopted, inspired by the cloth fabric of the same name, itself named for the city of Madras (now Chennai) in India.
It was initially called Palmain, an Americanized version of Palmehn, but the U.S. Postal Department denied that moniker, noting it too closely resembled Palmer, a community that has long since vanished. Debate continues how Madras was chosen as the second option, but it stuck.
