Karl August Leopold Böhm (28 August 1894 – 14 August 1981) was an Austrian conductor. He was best known for his performances of the music of Mozart, Wagner, and Richard Strauss. Life and career. He became the assistant director of music in 1919, and the following year, the senior director. On the recommendation of Karl Muck, Bruno Walter engaged him at the Bavarian State Opera, Munich in 1921. An early assignment here was Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, with a cast which included Maria Ivogün, Paul Bender, and Richard Tauber.

May 23, 2018 · From 1931 to 1933 Böhm held the post of Generalmusikdirektor of the Hamburg Opera; from 1934 to 1943 he was music director of the Dresden State Opera, where he gave the first performances of Die Schweigsame Frau (June 24, 1935) and Daphne (Oct. 15, 1938), which Strauss dedicated to him.
Böhm began to move steadily up the ladder through provincial opera houses and in 1927 he went on to become music director at the Staatstheater Darmstadt and then, in 1931, was appointed music director at Hamburgische Staatsoper serving until 1934 when he left for the prestigious post at Dresden.
In 1927 he became Generalmusikdirektor (music director) at Darmstadt. He often conducted modern operas, including Berg’s Wozzeck . In 1931 he moved to Hamburg.
Karl Böhm's career as a conductor had an unconventional start. While still a law student at the University of Vienna, he showed more interest in music than in law, although he eventually completed his doctoral dissertation in law. Böhm spent hours attending rehearsals of "Der Rosenkavalier," which left a lasting impression on him.
