Historically, the area that is now Newton was settled in 1639, and was originally first part of Cambridge (then called "the newe towne"). It split from Cambridge in 1681, and became known by its present name of Newton in 1766.

In 1679, the part of Cambridge south of the Charles River was incorporated as a separate town and called Cambridge Village, or sometimes New Cambridge. in 1691, the old name New Town was restored and finally, and officially, the name became Newton in 1766.

Newton Corner has passed through several stages of development on its way to becoming the populous village it is today. Newton’s first village was originally settled in the 1630s as a farming settlement of Cambridge. (It was not until 1688 that Newton was officially incorporated as a separate town.)
