On April 24, 1995, the University of Memphis ended its 21-year run as an independent when joined the newly formed Conference USA with several other southern universities. The league announced it would begin football competition in 1996. The Tigers finished 3–8 in 1995.

Men's basketball
The Memphis Tigers men's basketball program first gained national prominence when it reached the 1973 NCAA Division I basketball championship game.
