I know that many hotels don't accept online reservations until 3-6 months of the dates of travel. I'm not sure if it's actually cheaper to book now, versus in a few months time, or what the normal prices for hotels in Tokyo and such are generally in late May. How far in advance is it advisable to book a hotel room?

We stayed in two different hotels in Tokyo. At first we spent 8 nights at the Super Hotel Lohas Akasaka before we were lucky enough to stay at the noble Intercontinental Tokyo Bay for two nights.
Fortunately, hotels in Osaka offer a lot better value for money than in Tokyo. So you get a little more space for your money.
We actually booked an apartment in Kyoto via Airbnb. Unfortunately, the place was completely unacceptable, so we had to scramble to find another place to stay at eight o’clock in the evening. 97% of the hotels on booking.comwere already fully booked, but we still managed to find something in the end.
Hiroshima was a real blessing for our budget because there were actually a few reasonable hotels for under 100 euros.
We spent the last night of our trip on the small island Miyajima, which is located near Hiroshima. During the day, the island is literally overrun by tourists. But since almost all the visitors only come to Miyajima on a day trip from Hiroshima, it’s almost deserted in the evening.

- Call to book a Business Hotel when online booking is unavailable, especially on Wed-Fri when they're typically fully booked. Booking hotels in Tokyo is relatively easier for Sundays and Mondays.
- Rates are lower for hotels more than 5 minutes walking distance from a station, and higher for hotels within 5 minutes. A critical factor in selecting a hotel is the scale of the nearest station.
- Try cancelling at the last minute - best to do 4-11 days before. Tokyo hotels all have cancellation policies. They state in detail the cancellation fees and cancellation timing, but many hotels also have periods when there is no cancellation charge.
