If your child develops a fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing or other COVID-19 symptoms, call your healthcare provider immediately. They may recommend testing your child with a home kit, or they may ask you to come into their office for a visit. You may also be able to schedule a telehealth appointment with your provider.
If your child shows symptoms of COVID-19, they should quarantine and get tested as soon as possible, Dr. Esper recommends. If they test positive, they should be isolated to prevent potential spread through the rest of the household.
Children with mild symptoms (such as fever, mild sore throat, nasal congestion, mild cough, aches, and pains) can usually be taken care of at home without needing to see or call your health care provider.
