A - Well, they lived in Liverpool, England and I think they were a Folk group. When they came to the United States, they had to call themselves The Liverpool Spinners and in England we were known as The Detroit Spinners. Matter of fact, we have a couple of albums that say The Detroit Spinners, but in the States we're known as The Spinners.
Though The Spinners popularized, and came to epitomize, the lush sound of Philly Soul in the 1970s, they got their start in Detroit at Motown in 1961. The Spinners signed with Atlantic Records in 1972, teaming up with producer Thom Bell in Philadelphia where the group blossomed under his production aegis.
Their first album, Songs Spun in Liverpool (released under the group name of 'The Liverpool Spinners'), was recorded by Bill Leader from live performances. In 1962 Peter Kennedy of the English Folk Dance & Song Society recorded an album with them called Quayside Songs Old & New.
A Liverpool-based folk quartet, formed in 1958: The original line up of Tony Davis, Mick Groves, Cliff Hall and Hugh Jones was augmented by other short lived members including Jacqueline MacDonald who went on to form Jacqui And Bridie. Their first TV appearance was in 1960 and they also had their own BBC1 show in the 1960s that ran for many years.
