Its roots can be traced back to the Austronesian language family, with influences from Malay, Sanskrit, Arabic, Spanish, and English.
From at least before 1935, more books were written in Tagalog than in any other Philippine language. Tagalog has always been the language of Manila, the political centre of the Philippines in much of its history as a multiethnic country and a considerable economic centre of the Philippine islands since time immemorial.
Its standardized form, officially named Filipino, is the national language of the Philippines, and is one of two official languages, alongside English. Tagalog is an Austronesian language spoken as a first language by the ethnic Tagalog people, who make up a quarter of the population of the Philippines, and as a second language by the majority.
