The Duke of York approved of Le Marchant's idea, and on the 19th June, 1801, the Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea, opened to educate the children of non-commissioned officers and other ranks, beating the Royal Military College, which was not to be established for another five days as a Staff College and Cadet Corps, on the 24th June.
