It lies in the valley of the Gediz River (ancient Hermus River), below Mount Sipylus (Manisa Dağı), 20 miles (32 km) northeast of İzmir. It was called Magnesia ad Sipylum in ancient times, and the Magnetes of Thessaly are thought to have been its first inhabitants, in the 12th century bce.
