It is bordered by the Adriatic Sea on the east coast, the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west or Mediterranean coast, and the Ionian Sea to the south. In the north, Italy is bordered by the countries of France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.

- Piedmont. Beautiful Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) sits along Italy’s western border with France and is the largest of northern Italy’s regions. When translated, “Piemonte,” means “foot of the mountains.”
- Aosta Valley. The Aosta Valley is in Italy’s Alpine northwest corner, just above Piedmont and along the border with France and Switzerland. It’s Italy’s smallest region with the fewest people.
- Liguria. Spectacular Liguria is the curved area of land south of Piedmont, spanning the Mediterranean coastline. The region runs east from the French border to just south of La Spezia along the border with Tuscany.
The northern region of Italy is known locally as Il Nord or Settentrione and consists of eight separate regions – Peidmont, Liguria, Aosta Valley, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto as its shown in the map of northern Italy.
