Nelson – named after former Aquinas College President Paul T. Nelson – has represented Aquinas athletics since 1997.
Aug 16, 2019 · In July, Aquinas Athletics launched a refreshed Nelson Saint Bernard logo and a redesign of the AQSaints.com website. The branding process continued with the completion of two additional marks, unveiled today: the Athletic AQ logo and the spirit wordmark.
This inauguration ceremony occurred on October 7, 2022, from the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center on the campus of Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Also in 1997, the college officially named its mascot, a St. Bernard dog, "Nelson" in honor of President Paul Nelson, who retired that year. In 1998 the college was reorganized into three schools, each led by a dean and subdivided into departments: the School of Education, the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the School of Management.
