Historic New Bridge Landing preserves a compelling and scenic fragment of the Jersey Dutch countryside, strategically situated at the narrows of the Hackensack River and famed for its compelling role in the Revolutionary War.
History. The swing bridge at New Bridge Landing. New Bridge was settled by the Bergen Dutch, an agricultural community whose language and culture blended contributions from Dutch, Angolan African, German, English, French, Scotch and Scandinavian settlers. [1]
The house was erected by John and Annetje Zabriskie who purchased the Johannes Ackerman mill and farm in 1745 shortly after the construction of the first drawbridge along the Hackensack River. The Steuben House is now the only extant building remaining from the 1776 Retreat through Bergen County, known as the Retreat to Victory.
The extant iron swing bridge, manually operated, was erected in 1889 to speed the passage of schooners and testifies to the importance of commercial river traffic at that date. The New Bridge is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places as the oldest highway swing bridge in the State of New Jersey.
