Born at the tail end of the 1960s, Sesame Street evoked a world that was grounded in a radical, even utopian, vision. The show was big-city urban, gritty, unafraid of controversy, sometimes psychedelic, and most alarmingly to some of its earliest viewers, racially integrated—and proud of it.

- Oscar. Jim Henson and Jon Stone—a Sesame Street writer and producer—used to frequent a restaurant, Oscar’s Salt of the Sea. The owner, Oscar, was very rude, which is how Oscar got his name!
- Bert and Ernie. The first appearance of these two puppets was in the first test episode of Sesame Street in 1969, where they taught the audience the number two.
Throughout their nearly seven-decade existence, the Muppets have been regarded as a staple of the entertainment industry and popular culture in the United States and English-speaking areas around the world.
